About Tasks

A task is either a project taskA unit of work or collection of work associated with a project. or a checkpointZero day task record, which is used to represent an event in the project such as a key decision, completion of a work package, completion of a deliverable or end of a phase. Checkpoint tasks have no relationship with PSA milestones.. A project task is a unit of work with a duration of at least one day. A checkpoint is the equivalent of a milestone in other project management tools. A checkpoint is an event that represents a key decision or stage in a project. A checkpoints has a duration of zero days.

Note
A checkpoint has no relationship with a PSA milestoneA fixed target, which when achieved, can be billed to the customer for a fixed fee or by logging time against it..

Task Duration

When you create a task in Project Task Gantt this creates a project task in Salesforce. The initial duration of a task is one day or zero days depending on whether you create a project task or a checkpoint. The initial Start Date of a task is set depending on whether a task is selected. If a task is selected, the Start Date of the selected task is used. If no task is selected, the Start Date of the earliest task is used. If there are no project tasks in the projectA collection of activities and related items to be managed over a defined time range, such as timecards, expenses, milestones and budgets., the project start date is used.

When you edit the duration of a task in Project Task Gantt, the end date of that task is updated. When you edit the start and end dates of a task, the duration of that task is updated.

When you use Project Task Gantt to edit the dates of a predecessor task in a dependency relationship, the duration of the successor tasks is updated to reflect the type of dependency, e.g. Finish to Start. When you create or update a project task dependency, by changing the dependency type or lagWhen a depenency relationship between project tasks exists, this term refers to the time gap added at the end of a task before the succeeding task can start. The default lag is 0., this causes date changes to cascade to all successor (dependent) tasks.

Notes
Project Task Gantt displays and formats numbers and dates according to the locale of your Salesforce user. If you have not changed this, the default locale of your Salesforce organization is used. We recommend that you set the same time zone on your computer and the Salesforce User Time Zone field. If you do not do this, Start and End dates of project tasks may change in ways that you do not expect. To change the locale of your Salesforce user, from Setup click My Personal Information | Personal Information.
If you use Project Task Gantt and create or edit tasks in Salesforce or Task Management Classic, you must ensure that the Start Date & Time field of a task always starts at 8AM and the End Date & Time field of a task always finishes at 5PM. If the task is a checkpointZero day task record, which is used to represent an event in the project such as a key decision, completion of a work package, completion of a deliverable or end of a phase. Checkpoint tasks have no relationship with PSA milestones., ensure that the Start Date & Time and End Date & Time fields contain the same value. If you do not do this, Project Task Gantt may display task durations that you were not expecting.
